During physical activities such as weight lifting, muscle tension can build up in soft tissues and due to overextension or overuse, minor injuries and lesions can occur in these tissues which results in pain and poor athletic performances. Undergoing sports massage therapy helps alleviate pain and prevent injuries that affect flexibility, mobility, response time and your overall performance.
One of the most common setbacks for athletes and sports participants is Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, more commonly known as DOMS. This is the muscle pain that typically develops several hours after exercise and consists of predominantly eccentric muscle actions, especially if the exercise is unfamiliar. Studies have concluded that sports massage may help reduce and prevent the often painful and deliberating effects of DOMS. By flushing the muscle through blood and lymphatic circulation assists in the removal of lactic acid and other toxins.
Heavily exercised muscles may also lose the capacity to relax and in turn can cause chronically tight muscles and a reduction in flexibility. The reduced flexibility is often linked to muscle soreness and predisposes you to injury, especially muscle strains and tears. The flow of blood through tight muscles is poor (ischemia) which also causes pain. Undergoing a regular routine of massage therapy is extremely effective in combatting the effects of heavily exercised muscles.
